Overview

The Burundi national football team (nicknamed "The Swallows" or in French "Les Hirondelles") represents the Republic of Burundi in international men's association football. The team is controlled by the Fédération de Football du Burundi (FFB) and is a member of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) and the Council for East and Central Africa Football Associations (CECAFA).

History

  • Burundi played its first international fixtures in the 1970s after independence (1962) and the establishment of organized national football structures. Early decades featured mostly regional competition and friendlies rather than regular participation in major global tournaments.
  • For many years Burundi was a lower-profile African side, often eliminated in early rounds of African Cup of Nations (AFCON) and FIFA World Cup qualifying. Political instability and limited football infrastructure constrained development through the 1970s–1990s.
  • In the 2000s and 2010s Burundi began to develop more consistent youth programs and a diaspora of players in Europe and elsewhere started to bolster the national pool. The team gradually improved its competitiveness in regional competitions (CECAFA) and qualifiers.
  • The high point in Burundi’s history came in the late 2010s: Burundi qualified for the Africa Cup of Nations for the first time in the 2019 edition (held in Egypt), marking a historic milestone for the country’s footballing progress.

Major successes

  • First AFCON qualification: 2019 Africa Cup of Nations. Burundi’s appearance in AFCON 2019 was their first ever in the tournament; although they did not advance past the group stage, qualification itself was a landmark achievement and raised the profile of Burundian football internationally.
  • CECAFA Cup/Council tournaments: In regional East/Central African competition Burundi has had stronger showings at various times. Notably, Burundi won the CECAFA Cup in 2010, one of the region’s main trophies, and has had several other respectable finishes in the competition.
  • Improved FIFA rankings and greater presence of Burundian players in foreign leagues: While not trophies, the steady improvement and ability to produce professional players competing abroad have been important markers of progress.

Notable players

  • Fabrice Niyonzima – Midfielder and long-serving national team captain through parts of the 2000s and 2010s. A domestic stalwart who provided leadership for many years.
  • Saido Berahino – Born in Bujumbura, Burundi, Berahino moved to England as a child and rose through the English youth system. He represented England at youth levels but later switched allegiance to Burundi, making a notable impact when he debuted for the senior team in 2018 and scored on his competitive debut during AFCON qualifying. Berahino’s profile and career in the English leagues brought attention to Burundi.
  • Gaël Bigirimana – A midfielder who developed in the UK (Newcastle United youth, Coventry City, and others). Bigirimana chose to represent Burundi at senior level and has been an important presence in midfield.
  • Khadim Ndzengue (sometimes cited as Khadim Nshimirimana / locally prominent players) – Various domestic and regional stars, especially those who led Burundi to CECAFA success and AFCON qualification. (Note: records of some domestic-era stars are less comprehensively documented internationally.)
  • Goalkeepers and domestic icons – Over different periods Burundi produced reliable domestic keepers and defenders who anchored qualification campaigns; many are well-known locally even if not household names internationally.

Notable coaches

  • Jimmy Ndayizeye – A Burundian coach who served as national team manager during periods of rebuilding and contributed knowledge of the domestic scene to the national setup.
  • Ossénou (various regional coaches) – Burundi has employed both local and foreign coaches at different times to guide development and qualification efforts. Foreign appointments brought tactical variety and experience from other African footballing environments.
  • Stéphane Florent & other recent staff – Technical staff and coaches involved in the successful AFCON qualification era helped professionalize preparations and scouting, including staff focused on harnessing the diaspora talent pool.

Recent trajectory and legacy

Burundi’s qualification to AFCON 2019 stands as the clearest symbol of progress: it demonstrated that a small nation with limited resources could compete beyond its region. Since then the federation’s priorities have included strengthening youth development, improving domestic league standards, and encouraging players of Burundian origin abroad to represent the national team. Despite ongoing challenges—financial constraints, infrastructure needs, and competition from stronger African nations—Burundi remains respected for its resilience, passionate local support, and the emergence of players who can feature in professional leagues overseas.

Sources and records

Detailed historical records for Burundi are patchier than for larger footballing nations; official match lists, AFCON archives, CECAFA records, FIFA rankings, and player club histories provide the main documented sources for the facts summarized above.
