Overview

The Côte d'Ivoire national football team — commonly called Les Éléphants (The Elephants) — is one of West Africa’s strongest and most recognizable sides. Over the decades the team has moved from regional contender to a regular presence among Africa’s elite, producing world-class stars and memorable international moments.

Brief history

  • Early decades: The team emerged in the post‑colonial period and gradually built a reputation in West African and continental competitions throughout the 1960s–1980s. Early generations produced iconic domestic stars who became legends of African football.
  • Rise to continental prominence: From the 1990s onward Côte d’Ivoire became a consistent force at the Africa Cup of Nations and began to produce players who starred in the top European leagues, raising the national team’s level and profile.
  • The “Golden Generation”: Beginning in the early 2000s, a generation of players who were regulars at major European clubs — led by Didier Drogba, the Touré brothers and others — made Ivory Coast one of Africa’s most feared sides. That era saw multiple major-tournament appearances and the country’s first sustained presence at the FIFA World Cup.
  • Football and national unity: The team has also played an important social role. High-profile moments — notably Didier Drogba’s appeals for peace after the team’s qualification for the 2006 World Cup — are widely credited with contributing to national reconciliation during difficult political times.

Major successes

  • Africa Cup of Nations: Côte d’Ivoire are two-time AFCON champions, lifting the trophy in 1992 and again in 2015. They have also been frequent semi‑finalists and finalists, marking long-term continental competitiveness.
  • FIFA World Cup: Ivory Coast made its World Cup debut in 2006 and subsequently appeared at the finals in 2010 and 2014, becoming a familiar African representative on football’s biggest stage.
  • Regional and youth development: The country has produced numerous successful youth sides and has remained a strong contender in regional West African competitions and qualifiers, supplying top European clubs with in‑demand talent.

Most notable players

  • Didier Drogba — The most iconic Ivorian of the modern era: a prolific striker, Chelsea legend, national team captain and clutch performer. Drogba is widely regarded as Ivory Coast’s greatest player and played a key public role in the country’s social and political life.
  • Yaya Touré — A dominant box‑to‑box midfielder who won multiple African Player of the Year awards and reached the highest levels with Manchester City and Barcelona; his power, passing and timing made him the midfield fulcrum of the golden generation.
  • Kolo Touré — A dependable central defender who enjoyed an outstanding club career in England (Arsenal, Manchester City) and formed a defensive backbone for the national team for many years.
  • Laurent Pokou — A pre‑modern-era Ivorian legend and prolific goalscorer at the Africa Cup of Nations, often remembered as one of the continent’s great strikers of the 1960s–70s.
  • Other important contributors: Salomon Kalou, Gervinho, Didier Zokora, Emmanuel Eboué, Wilfried Bony, Seydou Doumbia, and many younger players who continued the national side’s competitiveness into the 2010s and beyond.

Notable coaches

  • Hervé Renard — The French coach who led Côte d’Ivoire to their 2015 Africa Cup of Nations victory; Renard is respected for tournament management and motivational skills across several African national teams.
  • Other influential coaches: Over the years Ivory Coast has worked with a number of high‑profile managers (both Ivorian and international) who helped shape tactics, bring through youth and manage the golden generation. Those coaches provided the structures that allowed the country’s top talents to flourish on the continental and world stage.

Legacy and current outlook

Côte d’Ivoire’s national team is remembered for combining raw talent with a strong national identity. The golden generation elevated the country’s international reputation and inspired a new wave of players. Today the federation continues to invest in youth development and talent pathways, aiming to regenerate the national side and maintain Ivory Coast’s place among Africa’s football powers.
