Overview

The France national football team (Les Bleus) is one of the world’s most successful and historically significant national sides. Governed by the Fédération Française de Football (FFF), France has combined periods of early promise, mid-century inconsistency, and a modern golden era that produced multiple major trophies and consistently high world rankings.

  • Founded: 1904 (FFF joined FIFA the same year)
  • Home colors: Blue shirts, white shorts, red socks
  • Nickname: Les Bleus (The Blues)

Early history (1900s–1950s)

  • France played its first official international in 1904 against Belgium. Early decades saw irregular participation and mixed results as the sport developed domestically.
  • Pre- and post-WWII eras were marked by talented individuals but limited international silverware. France hosted the 1938 World Cup (eliminated in quarterfinals).
  • In the 1950s, the team produced stars such as Raymond Kopa and Just Fontaine (Fontaine scored a record 13 goals in the 1958 World Cup), and France finished third at the 1958 World Cup — the country’s first major tournament breakthrough.

1960s–1980s: instability, rebuilding, and a high point

  • The national side struggled with inconsistency through the 1960s and early 1970s, failing to qualify for some major tournaments.
  • The 1980s marked a renaissance under manager Michel Hidalgo and the emergence of a celebrated attacking team featuring Michel Platini. France won the inaugural UEFA European Championship in 1984, with Platini dominating the tournament (9 goals) and earning Ballon d’Or recognition later in the decade.

1990s–early 2000s: rise to world champion

  • After a few setbacks, France enjoyed a resurgence under coach Aimé Jacquet and then Roger Lemerre. A generation of world-class talent (including Zinedine Zidane, Thierry Henry, Didier Deschamps, Marcel Desailly) matured.
  • Major milestones: hosted and won UEFA Euro 1984 earlier and — most importantly — won the 1998 FIFA World Cup at home, beating Brazil 3–0 in the final. Zinedine Zidane scored two memorable headers in that final.
  • France followed that success by winning UEFA Euro 2000 under coach Roger Lemerre (with David Trezeguet scoring the golden goal in the final vs Italy), becoming the first side to hold World Cup and European Championship titles consecutively in the modern era.

Mid-2000s–2010s: fluctuations and rebuilding

  • The team suffered early exits and qualification failures in the mid-2000s and missed the 2010 World Cup after a tumultuous qualifying campaign marked by internal problems.
  • From the early 2010s, under managers like Laurent Blanc and Didier Deschamps, France rebuilt a deep, talented squad. They reached the Euro 2016 final (lost to Portugal) when hosting the tournament, showcasing a new generation led by Paul Pogba, Antoine Griezmann and emerging young stars.

Modern era and continued success (2018–present)

  • France won the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia under coach Didier Deschamps, defeating Croatia 4–2 in the final. That squad combined world-class veterans (Griezmann, Giroud, Pogba, Kanté) with young stars — notably Kylian Mbappé, who won the Best Young Player award.
  • France reached the final of UEFA Euro 2016 and the 2022 World Cup final (lost to Argentina on penalties), remaining a dominant presence in global football.
  • The French player pool has stayed exceptionally deep, allowing tactical flexibility and strong tournament runs despite squad changes and injuries.

Major successes

  • FIFA World Cup: Winners 1998, 2018; Runners-up 2006, 2022; Third place 1958
  • UEFA European Championship: Winners 1984, 2000; Runners-up 2016
  • UEFA Nations League: Third place (notable participations)
  • Olympics and youth tournaments: Strong history in U-20/U-17 competitions and Olympic football silver/gold at various times

Most notable players

  • Zinedine Zidane — Iconic playmaker; starred in France’s 1998 World Cup (Man of the Match in the final) and Euro 2000 run; Ballon d’Or contender and widely regarded as France’s greatest footballer.
  • Michel Platini — Midfield creative force; led France to Euro 1984 victory (tournament top scorer) and enjoyed dominant club career at Juventus.
  • Kylian Mbappé — World-class forward; breakout star of the 2018 World Cup (youngest French World Cup goalscorer in a final) and key figure in the modern team.
  • Thierry Henry — Prolific forward and France’s all-time leading scorer for many years; crucial for the 1998–2000 golden period and a superstar for club and country.
  • Didier Deschamps — Central midfielder and captain of the 1998 side; instrumental leader on the pitch and later coach who led France to the 2018 World Cup title.
  • Raymond Kopa — One of France’s early greats (1950s), Ballon d’Or winner and creative attacker who inspired future generations.
  • Just Fontaine — Remarkable goalscorer who holds the single World Cup tournament record of 13 goals (1958).
  • Laurent Blanc, Marcel Desailly, Lilian Thuram — Defensive stalwarts across the 1998–2000 era; Thuram holds France’s record for most caps and scored the crucial semi-final brace in 1998.
  • Antoine Griezmann, Paul Pogba, N’Golo Kanté, Olivier Giroud — Key contributors in the 2018 World Cup-winning side and beyond, representing different tactical profiles: creativity, physicality, work rate, and target presence respectively.

Notable coaches

  • Michel Hidalgo — Architect of France’s attractive, attacking 1980s side and manager for Euro 1984 victory.
  • Aimé Jacquet — Built team cohesion and tactical organization that culminated in the 1998 World Cup win; praised for squad management and pragmatism.
  • Roger Lemerre — Continued success after 1998, leading France to Euro 2000 victory (and the 2001 FIFA Confederations Cup).
  • Raymond Domenech — Mixed record: guided France to the 2006 World Cup final but presided over some controversial moments and inconsistent qualification results.
  • Didier Deschamps — As coach (from 2012), built a modern, adaptable team that won the 2018 World Cup and reached the 2016 and 2022 finals; praised for man-management and tactical pragmatism.

Cultural and tactical identity

  • France is known for producing technically gifted attackers and creative midfielders while also regularly producing world-class defenders and physical athletes. The depth of talent across top European clubs fuels a competitive national pool.
  • Tactically, Les Bleus have alternated between attacking flair (Platini’s era) and pragmatic, balanced approaches (Jacquet, Deschamps), depending on personnel and opponent.
  • The national team is a symbol of modern French multiculturalism; many squads have showcased players of diverse backgrounds representing France on the global stage.

Legacy

France’s national team legacy combines historic individual brilliance, landmark tournament victories (1998, 2018, Euro 1984, Euro 2000), and continued relevance at the highest level. The country remains a perennial contender at major tournaments and a major talent factory for world football.
